The project investigated changes in the level of awareness about HIV/AIDS and behavioral patterns of prisoners, the prevalence dynamics of risk-taking behavior by convicts, including injection drug use, unprotected sex; as well as analyzed the implementation of harm reduction (HR) programs by NGOs in correctional facilities, and considered factors affecting their performance. Evaluation of harm reduction programs in correctional facilities had two stages (the baseline in January and the final in November 2007). The Baseline and the final studies were conducted by a uniform method (sample size, respondents selection method, survey method) and by the comparative analysis of the results. For the purpose of verification of the obtained quantitative data and deeper analysis, the quantitative study was accompanied by the qualitative one (semi-structured interviews with prison staff and the leaders of NGOs implementing harm reduction programs within the baseline study, and in-depth interviews with convicts within the final study).
