The fifth wave of research on stigma and discrimination (S&D) of PLHIV in Ukraine was implemented in late 2023 – early 2024.

This research, as well as the four previous waves of the Stigma Index in Ukraine (2010, 2013, 2016 and 2020), was conducted by AC “Socioconsulting” in cooperation with CO “100% Life” (previous name the All-Ukrainian Network of PLWH) using the international methodology “PLHIV Stigma Index 2.0”. It features an integrated approach to collecting empirical data that combines quantitative and qualitative data collection methods, namely:

1) Structured face-to-face interviews with PLHIV using tablets. The sample type was representative, proportional, quota-based by region, settlement type, gender and age, as well as by the proportion of representatives of key populations vulnerable to HIV. A total of 2700 respondents were interviewed.

2) In-depth interviews with PLHIV using the “life story” method, 25 in total.

In all 5 waves of the research, data collection was conducted at the national level, including in all major regions of Ukraine, with due representation of men/women, different age groups and key populations. These ratios were calculated based on medical statistics. This ensures the proper quality of the data obtained and the possibility of correct comparisons and studying trends in the prevalence of S&D among PLHIV in various spheres of life: the healthcare sector, the social environment of PLHIV, their internal stigma, and violations of rights in other areas of life.

The results of the fifth wave of the “PLHIV Stigma Index 2.0 in Ukraine” research were presented at two national conferences, namely at the final conference of the project “HEALTHLINK: Support in Shaky Times”, held on June 5, 2024, organized by the 100% Life; and at the national conference of the REACH 95 project, held on June 21, 2024, organized by the USAID project “REACH 95: Access to Quality HIV Services in Healthcare Facilities in Ukraine”.
